It is simply towards become this begins to fall apart, however the smack-right up finale rescues it on 'red’. Wonderfully staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it has zero great complications in life off its very ugly title.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Film Bulletin told you „The film actions at the an instant speed, the fresh conversation was advanced and you will characterisations basically active. Brand new film’s publisher and you may manager, Robert Rossen, sets up a great multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an effective cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) worked at local casino and you may dated a corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic script, this new cast’s suavely controlled body language out of love and you will hazard, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably assertive photos (and his political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet , in depth spectacle a low profile antique of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Whilst spot comes after a familiar trend, the fresh new characterizations was new plus the performances suitable in order to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and you can relevant, preventing the emotional, phoney touching. Strange digital camera basics come-along once in a while in order to heighten desire and you can temporarily arrest the attention. Solid teamplay by Robert Rossen, increasing because director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand spanking new journalist and you can member manufacturer, plus supports rendering it a delicate manufacturing.” [ 11 ]

Its generally a question of enjoying Mr. Powell undergo his paces fashionably when you’re a huge cast away from stars and stars render him traditional support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little lady whom brings forth the fresh best in your and you will Ellen Received is the easy and you can slinky vixen who will get your to the jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy as the villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do another able tour given that a tired cops inspector just who ultimately shuts the way it is. A great deal of drinking and you will smoking is completed from the all worried.” [ 12 ]
